A Gratitude Habit for a Joy-filled Life

This past weekend I attended a mindful New Year workshop that began with a restorative yoga practice. The slow movements and soft stretches ended with a meditation, which allowed for quiet time to reflect on the past, present, and future as I enter this next decade. The teacher talked about the practice of gratitude ultimately leads to a life filled with more joy and this totally resonated with me!

It makes sense! When I take time to reflect on all that I have in life I immediately smile to myself. If I did this everyday my happy life could become a joyful life because I bring attention to what I have now is enough and I am enough.

This doesn’t mean you can’t work towards something and be excited for the future, rather there’s a middle ground where I am finding appreciation for the journey. 2020 is going to be a transformative year in many ways so I want to be sure to savor every moment and remind myself just how wonderful life can be when you take a moment to JUST BE HERE NOW.

Lizzie 2020 Life Update

  • February: Leaving with my boyfriend Emmett for a semester abroad in New Zealand at Lincoln University. (away from family & friends & my puppies for 5+ months)

  • March: Celebrating my 21st birthday

  • Summer: Working on a farm in Hawaii

  • August: Starting my senior year at University of Florida

  • September: Completing the 1-year online Institute of Integrative Nutrition Holistic Health Coach Certification

  • Launching a business ^ ?

  • Who knows what else may manifest in 2020!

With so many adventures and new experiences to unfold in New Zealand, it has been hard to not be anxious to go yet also trying be mindful to spend time with family and friends who I know will be missed! Practicing gratitude and taking it slow is how I plan to find that middle ground between being present and working towards my future plans.

My vision board for 2020 that I made this weekend!!

Ways to practice gratitude:

  • Before bed write three things you are grateful for

  • OR While lying in bed ^

  • Carry a mini journal “Gratitude Journal”: take a moment each day to write a happy moment or look back through your journal at past happy moments

  • Share your gratitude: write a gratitude letter or share around the dinner table

Looking at my 2020 intentions they all ultimately boil down to living a joyful life and extending my joy out into the world! I’m going to take my own advice and make gratitude a habit!

I would love to hear from you all. Feel free to share with me your 2020 intentions, sharing with others helps to turn dreams into reality!
